Photo of Beate BieniekBeate made a commitment to Asia very early on in her career, and has lived in the region for the past eighteen years and has been based in Singapore, Hong Kong, Beijing and Shanghai.  Since October 2006, she has been Vice-President Communications for American Standard’s Asia Pacific Operations.  As member of the leadership teams, she drives excellence in communications across all of the company’s business units.  Prior to joining American Standard, she was with Siemens China for over ten years.  As Director Corporate Communications, she was pivotal in developing and successfully implementing comprehensive and integrated communication strategies and programs targeting both internal and external stakeholders.  During this time, she also developed a considerable number of highly skilled communication professionals and firmly put her team on the path to world class.  She holds a bachelor degree from HKUST and an MBA from CEIBS.


Annick de Kermadec - Bentzmann, President

Annick de Kermadec was born in Beijing and spent most of her childhood in Asia and Africa.  At the age of eighteen, she returned to France to study Oriental arts, majoring in Chinese, Malay, and international marketing management.  She joined BNP in 1981 and was posted in Beijing the following year as deputy chief representative; she worked there until her return to Paris in 1987.  In February 1989, she married Hervé de Bentzmann.  She returned to China in March 1990, as chief representative for Eastern China.  In 2000, after BNP and Paribas merged, Annick was appointed general manager of the Shanghai branch.  In 1991, she founded the Cercle Francophone de Shanghai and was involved in forming the French Business Associations in Beijing and Shangahi.  She was elected vice-Chairperson in 1996 and Chairperson in September 2005 -- the first time a woman had been elected to that position.


Corinne Schuchard, Managing Director Human Resources

Corinne Schuchard photoCorinne Schuchard has worked at FedEx for a decade.  She is currently the Managing Director Human Resources.  Three of her years at FedEx have been in China where she is dedicated to supporting the company’s continued growth.  As a result of her aggressive recruitment strategy, Corinne oversaw the hiring of 1,926 employees and decreased staff turnover to 8.17%.  In coming to China, her key strategy was to bring to life FedEx's philosophy and culture within the Chinese context.  She has initiated new development and training programs to provide platforms for employee growth.  This has, in turn, facilitated more internal promotion opportunities.  As a result Corinne's efforts, 70.1% of FedEx managers in China were promoted from non-management positions.  Thanks to her endeavors, FedEx was honored as the 2005 Best Employer of Choice in China, which has further enhanced FedEx's reputation as a great employer.


Annie Young-Scrivner, General Manager

Annie Young-Scrivner photoAs the General Manager of PepsiCo Greater China, Annie Young-Scrivner is responsible for developing the strategic framework for PepsiCo’s Macro-Snacks & Quaker businesses. She leads all functions, including:  Marketing, Sales, Finance, Operations, R&D, Agriculture, PR, and Government Relations.  Prior to that position, Annie was the VP of Sales for China Beverages and the Vice President General Manager of the Mass Merchandiser and Club Channel of business for PepsiCo in the U.S., where she was responsible for annual retail revenues of around $2 billion.  Annie is a fifteen-year PepsiCo veteran who has held varies roles in Sales, Marketing, and General Management.  She holds an Executive MBA from University of Minnesota and BA from the University of Washington. She was on the Executive Committee for PepsiCo’s Asian Network and previous Board member of Network of Executive Women.  Annie and her family live in Shanghai China.

Carol Wingard, Managing Director

Consulting’s Greater China practice, has twenty years of consulting and  business development experience implementing growth and investment strategies  for multinational and domestic corporations within the China market.  A magna cum laude graduate of Princeton University and fluent Mandarin speaker, Carol was first based in China in 1987, working on a range of early-stage joint venture projects. Since then she has lived and worked in Beijing, Singapore and Shanghai.  L.E.K. is a global strategy and investment consulting firm focused on helping clients achieve superior performance and sustainable growth through business strategy development and mergers and acquisition support.  As the Managing Partner, Carol has overseen unprecedented growth in the China group's revenues and profitability while positioning L.E.K. Consulting as a leader in serving, among others, the private equity and life science sectors in China.

Photo of Carole HantelmannCarola Hantelmann, Ph.D, is a former teacher, sociologist, and headhunter.  She came to China four years ago.  Since her arrival, she has worked for Sino-European university co-operations as the link between industry and education.  Since July 2005, she has been facilitating networking between the first Sino-German University of Applied Sciences as well as assisting with their PR and Cultural Events.  She is fortunate to have created her own job field from scratch -- lucky to have been in the right place at the right time.

Jean S K Lee, Professor of Management

Photo of Jean LeeJean Lee, Ph.D, is a Professor of Management at China Europe International Business School (CEIBS).  Before coming to China, Jean taught at the National University of Singapore (NUS).  She is the former Associate Dean and the Founding Director of the International MBA and Executive MBA program at NUS.  Jean’s research interests include leadership, corporate culture, women in management, Chinese business management, change management, HR management, and cross-culture management.  She has published extensively in local and international journals and served as the Associate Editor of the Asia-Pacific Journal of Management.  Jean has consulted and conducted training programs for many multinational, local, and international organizations in South-East Asia and mainland China.  She has also received several Teaching and Service Awards based on her excellent teaching and outstanding leadership and contribution in the profession.  In addition, she was awarded the 2005 Outstanding HR Educator Award in China by the Asia-Pacific HR Association.

 Michelle Lu-Ferguson photoAs a patient wrote, “it takes a special person to look after others with the kindness and concern you always show, hope you know how much your help is appreciated.”  Dr. Michelle Lu-Ferguson is very special to many women who gave birth in Shanghai.  She is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and dedicated to the maintenance of the highest standards in patient care, medical education, and research in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  Besides multiple publications in the medical field, she has also donated her time and effort to the general and professional communities for medical education.  Michelle is also a happy mother of two young children, who inspire her to bring more and more healthy babies to this world when she is spending many sleepless nights in the hospital caring for others!

Amy Sommers, Partner

Photo of Amy SommersAmy Sommers grew up in Seattle, Washington, where, unlike many Americans, she came to think of China not as part of the "Far East," but as part of the "near West".  In 1986, she earned a bachelor's degree with distinction from the University of Washington’s Jackson School of International Studies  where the focus of her major was Chinese Studies.   Amy graduated from the University of Washington School of Law, known for its strong East Asian focus in 1991.  The focus of her practice has been on various corporate transactions both out-bound and in-bound to China.  In 2004, she joined Squire Sanders & Dempsey to help launch its new Shanghai office.  Amy, fluent in Mandarin Chinese, counsels clients on matters including mergers and acquisitions, cross-border business transactions such as distribution, manufacturing and various strategic arrangements, real estate development and investment in regulated sectors such as education, financial services, and value-added telecommunications.

mariaMaria Trombly is the most prolific business journalist in Shanghai. She and her staff file over twenty business articles a week to leading US business publications. She started her career at the Chicago Tribune then went overseas to become a foreign correspondent. She was the national editor for the Moscow Tribune, then went to Reuters to spend more time in the field covering civil wars. Her work took her to Chechnya, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and the former Yugoslavia. After returning to the US, she covered the dot-com boom for Computerworld, then went to Securities Industry News to cover the global financial services industry. Maria is active in the Society of Professional Journalists and other professional organizations. In 2003, she received the society's President's Award for her work as the chair of the SPJ's International Journalism Committee. In 2006, she was elected president of the Shanghai Entrepreneur Group.

Elodie Abbe, a 33 year old French citizen, came to China in 1996 to study Chinese.  After her studies, she was hired by Carrefour in October 1997.  During her nine years at Carrefour, she was the National Training and Development Director and in that capacity she created the training and development department, designed the whole Carrefour China training system, and managed a team of 25 full-time trainers, and coordinated more then 1,500 part-time store trainers.  She left Carrefour at the end of 2006 and has just given birth to her first child, a son.  During the second quarter of 2007, Elodie will create her own company, doing consulting on HR and training issues, as well as advising Chinese companies which want to invest abroad on intercultural issues.

Maren Maren Brockmann came to China for the first time in 1996 as part of her studies in Applied Business Languages and International Management.  After one year as a student and trainee in China, it was clear to her that she would return for work after graduation – the China-bug had caught her.  The “way back” to China included a short detour of two years working in Hong Kong before returning to Shanghai in 2001 as Sales Manager Multiples for Bosch Power Tools.  Currently she works for Bosch Power Tools (China) Co., Ltd, leading a sales team of 110 people.  Even after five years, she is still enjoying living and working in China.  Apart from Maren’s work, her interests lie in sports and traveling, when time allows.


Rachel Fitton, Managing Director

Rachel Fitton has over ten years experience working in the field of executive search and recruiting within Asia.  She began her career in Hong Kong, where she initially performed searches for hedge fund and IT companies.  In 1997 she moved to Tokyo where she focused on recruiting for the financial sector.  In 2001, Rachel moved to Shanghai and spent a year studying Mandarin full-time at Fudan University.  She then took as position as the China Chief Representative of one the world’s largest executive search firms.  In 2003, at the age of 30, Rachel founded SearchBank with the goal of developing a more client-focused and delivery-oriented search firm, while at the same time embodying her own personal ideals that the workplace should be a fun place to be.  SearchBank has dynamically grown since its start nearly four years ago; and now has six offices and is continuing to expand throughout Asia Pacific and beyond.  Rachel also has one daughter, Isabella, who pretty much takes up whatever free time Rachel ever has!”

Rebecca Hickman, Marketing & Events Manager

RebeccaRebecca Hickman's twenties have been the most amazing adventure . . . after completing a Masters in International Relations, she packed her bags for an internship in Kofi Annan's office at the United Nations in New York.  On her return to London, she took a job directing regional business conferences, but after a year, desperately missing Asia, she returned to her home town of Hong Kong, where she helped The Conference Board set up their Asia-Pacific conference division.  Passionate about exploring the country she was born in, she enrolled in an intensive three month Mandarin course in Beijing before taking up her current position in Shanghai.  With the help of a small, but highly productive team, she currently "entertains, informs, and connects" more than 9000 people at over 100 meetings and events.  In 2006, the team increased event activities by 52% and raised 447,525 RMB for charities in China.

Anne Torricelli, Manager of Foreign Development,

Anne Torricelli photo Anne Torricelli was born in France in 1983.  She reports that her life has been one of "fighting through her life."  Due to her father's death when she was 16, she took a job as a waitress to help her family.  Although she had to keep up her studies and work, Anne excelled at school.  She entered a famous business school in France, Sup de Co, and won an export prize in cosmetics.  She had always been attracted to Asia, so to China she came without a job!  She now works for one of the richest Chinese men, Mr. Li Qin Fu.  Due to her recent promotion, she is now manager of foreign development for a “new Monaco” in China, which is now under construction.  Her philosophy is "you have to take the chance that comes to you and not let it leave".

Born in Trento, Italy, Veronica Campidelli has a strong bond with China as she speaks fluent Mandarin, is married to a Chinese and has worked in China since 1999. Graduated from Trento University and from the EU-China Managers Training Programme in Beijing, in 2000 she moved to Shanghai and set up Axea; she then established their first factory in Shanghai, Qingpu district, Olimpia Splendid Air Conditioning Ltd., Co.; followed by a second manufacturing facility, Marchesi Metal Tech Ltd Co, in Suzhou in year 2005. Veronica is the general manager and a member of the board of directors. Veronica is married and has a 5-month old daughter. In her spare time she joins the activities of the Suzhou Catholic Church.

 Lucy Chen received her bachelor degree from Nanjing University of Information Science & Technology in 1991.  Thereafter, she worked at a subsidiary company of TRIUMPH International where she supervised a professional team responsible for the IT function and managed a series of business operation projects.  In April 2006, Lucy took a position with First Harvest, a company which Provides Solution and Service in PR , Marketing, IT areas. One month thereafter, by invitation of Dr. Jeffrey Popma, a world renowned cardiologist from Harvard University, Lucy joined to initiate the International Medical Video Interventional Program ("IMVIP"), designed to provide a bridge of communication for physicians of AP and USA to review complex cases, discuss new clinical research, and explore challenging questions. Through Lucy's efforts, the project received a strong endorsement from the IMVIP organization and Shanghai Cardiology Society.  With support of Johnson & Johnson, additional rollouts of IMVIP are anticipated for 2007.

Jennifer Dawson photo Jennifer Dawson is the founder and managing director of Sources Consulting (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., which was established as a Wholly Owned Foreign Enterprise in 1998.  This followed initial incorporation in Hong Kong in 1993.  From then until now, Ms. Dawson and her staff at Sources have offered incoming expatriates with assistance in all aspects of getting settled in Shanghai including, but not limited to, home search. She is the author of two expatriate guides to Shanghai, "Living in Shanghai" and "The Vigers Guide to Setting up in Shanghai".  Sources is also the publisher of "Sources Taxi Cards" which contain approximately 2,000 Shanghai addresses in Chinese, Pinyin, and English, easing transportation problems for expatriates and "Sources Driver's Cards" which provide newcomers basic communication with drivers.

 

Michelle Garnaut, Owner

michelle Michelle Garnaut is a trained chef and restaurateur with a culinary career that spans 25 years, several continents, and positions ranging from waitress to caterer to proprietor.  A guest chef stint at The Peace Hotel in 1996 convinced her that Shanghai was ready for an independent restaurant similar to her Hong Kong establishment, M at the Fringe.  In 1999, M on the Bund opened on the historic waterfront -- a bold move given that the Bund was then a culinary desert.  The Glamour Room and Bar followed in 2001 (and the new Glamour Bar in 2006).  Michelle also launched the popular "Live at the Glamour Bar" and "Incidental Weekend" series, along with the Shanghai Literary Festival; these have brought world-famous names as well as regional and local talents to M.  In addition, Michelle also has a long-term commitment to charity work and is a director of Care for Children.

Maggie Yu photoDuring her first visit to China in 1998, Maggie Yu decided to pursue her career in Shanghai away from her home country, Taiwan.  A few months later, Maggie enrolled in Fudan University as a postgraduate student seeking a Master’s Degree in Law.  It was a very exciting and challenging year and in 2002, she established Asian Biz Center & Consulting, providing serviced offices as well as company set-up consultation. As a founder of the company, she has been leading and developing the company into three business centers serving over 120 foreign companies in Shanghai. In addition to this, Maggie has been using her expertise in Law and leading a consulting group to offer extensive business solutions to their clients, such as company set-up, tax planning and accounting consultation services.

 

SOCIETAL CONTRIBUTION

Kerstin Kaehler

Photo of Kerstin Kaehler Kerstin Kaehler has been living in China for over nine years.  Her experience includes two GM positions: one at the German Centre Shanghai and the other at KAHLA Porcelain. She is currently freelancing.  Her free time is spent volunteering with Project Integration, a community outreach group committed to assisting migrants with the payment of educational fees for their children.  As a volunteer, she has helped raise the number of sponsored children from 75 to 200.  She reports that "it is when we visit the schools and see 'our' children learn and play with their classmates that I
feel most proud of my volunteer work."  Kerstin draws her inspiration from Gandhi who challenged us all to "be the change you want to see in the world."

Joanne Price
The Giving Tree
Joanne Price photoJoanne Price, born in Yunnan Province, received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Ecology.  After graduating, Joanne and her family left China.  After several moves, they returned to Shanghai in 2003.  Although Joanne’s earlier career had involved teaching English and Ecology, she was increasingly drawn toward community service.  Therefore, after arriving in Shanghai, she joined the Community Center Shanghai as their community liaison where she linked expatriate volunteers with local individuals and institutions.  Through this work she created The Giving Tree, which links donors with needy children who are given gifts for the new year.  The Giving Tree has grown from a program involving 50 children to one that reaches over 3000. Unique for an expatriate humanitarian program, The Giving Tree has been lauded by the Chinese government, and now forms part of the annual roster of charity events surrounding the Lunar Festival.

 

Carol Wolfson
Second Chance Animal Aid
Carol Wolfson photoCarol Wolfson is an internationally accomplished career woman with over 20 years distinguished history of charitable work for animal welfare, women’s health, and children’s education.  Her success with Second Chance Animal Aid (SCAA) is unparalleled.  Since its founding in March 2005, Carol has turned SCAA into a well-known and well-respected organization, improving the lives of both pets and people by healing and facilitating the adoption of over 350 stray and abandoned cats and dogs to good permanent homes.  SCAA is one of less than 250 organizations worldwide to be Associated with the U.K. RSPCA – an extraordinary achievement within one year.  Carol’s 25+ years in Asia - raising funds to build rural schools in Inner Mongolia and Shanxi Province, medical clinics in Tibet, healing companion-animals, and promoting international charity products at her framing/home décor store, are captured in a book of memoirs will be published in May.

Norani Abu-Bakr, Director and Founder
Home Sweet Home

Just over two years ago Norani Abu Bakr used her own funds to establish Home Sweet Home, a shelter and training center for disabled migrant workers. Ms. Abu Bakr’s work with the homeless also involves forging relationships with communities of migrant workers and staying closely aligned with local authorities, involving them in group events at Home Sweet Home. Ms. Abu Bakr is testimony to what ingenuity and determination can achieve when it comes to assisting Shanghai's most needy populations. Ms. Abu Bakr's work has inspired others, and their generous contributions have allowed her to open a second Home Sweet Home just two years after the first was set up.

Christine Cullen, Chair and Founder
Heart-to-Heart

Christine Cullen Christine Cullen is the founder and chair of Heart-to-Heart, an organization that helps raise funds to pay for heart surgery for Chinese children. Heart-to-Heart not only helps fund the surgeries, it also collects and distributes new and used clothing and personal hygiene to the children and their often-destitute families. The group visits the children during their hospital stays and Christine personally has traveled throughout China to follow up with the children and their families after the surgeries. She personally devised the hugely successful Heart Bear fund-raising project in July 2005 and arranges for their sale at countless bazaars and functions. Thus far, Heart-to-Heart has funded surgeries for 50 children and helped raised the awareness of this
crucial need of the poor in China.
Though honored to be selected as a finalist, to avoid even the appearance of unethical process, Mrs Cullen has chosen not to contend for this award.
