Abarna Muthiah

Relocating with my husband and large sea cargo, from Mumbai to Sydney to Shanghai, within a time period of 24 months, worked great for my husband’s career.  As a chartered accountant, giving up a good job and a defined way of life to make the move with him has been great fun or extremely unsettling depending on my day.  Being told by every recruitment agent that I have good qualifications and experience but would not fit into a mid manager profile due to my lack of Mandarin skills derailed me quite a bit.  A friend introduced me to the EPWS during my familiarization trip to Shanghai, and I did sign up almost immediately upon getting here.  Having been in Shanghai for three months now, it has taken me just a few meetings with this organization and the like-minded people it brings together to make me strongly believe that I am in Shanghai for a reason, and I just need to go find it.  Having a strong accounting background both in terms of qualifications and experience, putting together and presenting the numbers of large corporates, signing up for the post of Treasurer in the EPWS board is another step I would like to take towards finding my reason for being here.

Abarna Muthiah is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and an Associate member of CPA, Australia.  Starting her career in Arthur Andersen, she provided assurance and business advisory services to a range of multinational clients such as Hyundai Motor, Alstom, and Cairn Energy.  Before her move to Sydney, she was leading the financial reporting team for Oracle Financial Services, the flagship company of Oracle’s financial services's global business unit, catering to the requirements of all internal and external stakeholders.  Given the global financial crisis during her move to Sydney, Abarna volunteered with the risk management department of a large NFP called Mission Australia.  Independently or partnering with external consultants such as PWC, she provided consulting services for various internal departments.  She was recognized amongst over a thousand volunteers and awarded the CEO’s celebrate volunteer award for her efforts.

She is currently in Shanghai, finding her reason for being here.
