EPWS & Intelligent China Present:

Special Evening Event on March 4th, 2010

Women and Charity

What we can do to impact the world.

We would like to dedicate this year’s International Women’s Day to the women who make a valuable contribution to charities all over the world. With this event we want to deliver insight into their stories, their motivations and show what they do to impact the world.

The event will start with a book-talk about an amazing story. In 2007, Lisa Bentley’s book "Saving Levi" was published. The story tells of the mirasaving leviculous events that led to saving the life of her adopted son who was found abandoned in a desolate field with 3rd degree burns over 80% of his 6 week old body.

The second part of this evening will be a panel discussion about three women’s charity and volunteer experiences in China and Africa, and how those experiences enriched their lives and impacted the world around them. Ms. Katherine Song, founder of Intelligent China, will share how the volunteering experience changed her perspectives of life and helped set her goal to support social business and charitable donations through Intelligent China.  Ms. Sarah Ghan, a former KPMG business consultant and EPWS board member, will share her experience of working in poverty-affected rural Kenya last year, where she led a team of volunteers to assist primarily in the construction of houses for widows. Ms. Lisa Bentley will focus on Orphan Prevention and look at new and creative ways to reduce the number in China.

The discussion will be moderated by Tatjana Mujovic Piscevic, Managing Director of Wellwood International Limited and President of EPWS.

In addition, some charity organizations are invited to be present at the event. Silent auction and charity raffle tickets are also available for people who want to make donations.

About the speakers:

Ms. Lisa Bentley lived the quintessential upper middle class lifestyle until, in 2001, she decided to enrich her life by moving from the USA to China to help medically disabled children. For the last 8 years, Lisa has not only devoted her life to her own 6 children, 2 of whom she adopted from China, but also to the care of medically disabled orphans. Since arriving in China, she has worked with two orphanages which provide medical assistance and temporary housing for orphans while working with adoption agencies to find them permanent families.  She is about to launch two new projects; "OP" (Orphan Prevention) along with "Levi's friends" (helping fellow burn survivors). Her personal story has been featured on the front page of the Los Angeles Times. She has also been featured on numerous TV and radio programs. She is currently at work on her second book along with a documentary and possible film. Lisa is involved with several programs to help medically fragile children and rural families in China.

Ms. Katherine Song

After almost eight years career with Boeing in America and China, Katherine decided to take a break and committed some of her time to volunteering in Africa. In the summer of 2009, she traveled to Kenya and stayed with a local family. She taught in a couple of schools outside Nairobi as well as in a refugee camp in Eldoret. In September 2009 she came back to Shanghai and established Intelligent China Professional Network. Katherine and Intelligent China charity focus is to promote education, poverty alleviation and livelihood improvement in China and Africa.

Ms. Sarah Ghan came to China in 2003. Previously she worked in Australia as a lawyer, and moved to China to pursue a career in finance, where she has worked for global firms including KPMG and Goodman Group. In 2009, Sarah decided to combine her passion for assisting marginalised communities, with her professional services experience. She successfully applied for the position of Team Leader of an Overseas Action Program in Kenya, established by the Australian non-profit organisation, World Youth International. The role required her to manage a team of volunteers in rural Kenya, where they assisted in improving the livelihoods of widows. Whilst working in various villages, and living amongst those affected  by poverty, Sarah witnessed numerous legal, environmental, social, and cultural complexities that contribute to the challenges that development organisations face in executing their mission to reduce poverty. She is now committed to a path in international development management, and is studying a Master of Science in Poverty Reduction with the University of London.
